October 2018 – Savant at BBTS 2018

Savant attended the 36th British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS) Annual Conference held for the first time in Brighton earlier this month.

Tailored to meet the specific needs of the transfusion professional, delegates from around the world gathered to spend three days in presentations, talks and workshops as well as visiting the trade exhibition with over 30 exhibitors demonstrating a range of transfusion specific products and services.

Savant’s history with the BBTS goes back over 20 years since the creation of PULSE. In that time, PULSE has evolved into the core system used by NHSBT as well as the blood services of Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Jersey.

The conference also gave us an opportunity to demonstrate three new applications which were received well by the delegates.

• Li-LAC, a Human Breast Milk Labelling and Tracking System;
• LabelCyte which provides tissue and stem cell laboratories the freedom to create bespoke labels;
• SSC which was of interest to lots of visitors to the stand who were looking to acquire a stock control system.

We also took the opportunity to demonstrate the new proof of concept Gennaro app, a session related application which is designed to make the donor experience quicker and more efficient when donating. All those that tried it out were very impressed, commenting on the slick design and the upon the intuitive and easy to use interface. All agreed that it would reduce waiting times for donors and allow session staff to provide a much improved level of service.

All of our multi function pens (best in show) were snapped up by the delegates along with the personalised chocolate truffles!!

With next year’s show pencilled in for 18th to 20th September in Harrogate, preparations are already underway!

May 2018 – Partnership with Lancaster University

Since November 2017, we have been working in partnership with Lancaster University. The University will work with local businesses in order to help them focus on a particular issue or area that needs attention, the students will deliver a new resource, insight and recommendations for practical action. This can be in anything from strategy and business planning to marketing analytics, opportunities in new technologies and project management.

At our initial meeting in November 2017, the students showed great enthusiasm, initiative and motivation for this project. The initial brief we provided included :

• Whether there was a market for the R&D project and if so the size of the market.
• Maturity of the market and any entry barriers to the market (the product has the capability of being multi-language).
• Competition in the market.
• How to position and sell the product in the market.

At the end of April 2018, the students gave their final presentation of recommendations and findings which will be extremely valuable to us. From the recommendations, we will continue to exploring the European market for the product and possible partnerships through contacts made in the research stages of the project.

At the beginning of May we began a second business partnership with Lancaster University, this time working with some MSC Marketing students. The aim of the project is to complete a sector analysis, route to market and competitor analysis for our Stock Control System. We are looking forward to read what recommendations this project may bring us.

Savant have been working closely with Zebra Technologies and Sciamed to create the Maternal Milk checking app that will run on the TC51 Android device. The handheld system for use in neo-natal and maternity units, checks that a baby is only being fed by breast milk expressed by her/his mother.

The system allows the neonatal nurse to print milk bottle labels including unique barcodes via a Bluetooth connected printer. These labels and the associated baby’s wrist band are scanned to ensure that they match before a feed is permitted. The app also records all feed instances for the potential upload into Li-LAC, the Human Milk Banking System also supplied by Savant.
